TomTalks #32: CASISDEAD, Famous Last Words UK/EU Tour - XOYO, Birmingham (Personality and Skill Steal the Show!)

Starting 2024 on the blog, we had a sensational showing from CASISDEAD. The Geordie rapper, born in Tottenham, has been a certified name in the underground for many years, with fans waiting a while for a new body of work. He finally released his debut album, 'Famous Last Words' in 2023, which reached no. 7 in the U.K. Album charts. After a BRIT award nomination, he is at his peak of popularity.

Arriving at XOYO, I was reminded why it's such a good venue. The quality sound system is much better than the 02 Institute and 02 Academy, which is a breath of fresh air for Birmingham. The crowd wasn't packed in, with two bars, a balcony, and a downstairs area to boot. It made for a fun experience. that wasn't ruined by the overcrowding of venues like Lab 11.

After a DJ started the night with a mixture of UKG and Grime, the first support act nineteen97 performed to a fairly-busy venue. Despite only playing around four tracks, he had good energy and got his steps in on the stage. He concluded his set with an unreleased track; a future 140 banger in the making. Felix Dubs then changed up the vibe with some smooth and sensual music. From the chilled sounds of Larry June and Ice Cube to Qendresa and speedboys bringing some soul and jazz to the party, It was a real mixture. It made for a nice change of pace from your average hip-hop/rap gig.

The main man then took to the stage, and man, did he put on a show. Before we get into the music, his stage presence stood out. His banter with the crowd warmed you to his personality, and he was very grateful for the support. He and his pals interacted with the crowd and got them hyped up for a great show.

Starting with some of the new record, he gave performances of tracks like 'A Spark', 'Pineapple Juice', and 'Venom'. The latter, in particular, got the crowd dancing and was a fun part of the show. His slick delivery was just as good live, as in the studio, with people singing back his witty bars.

We then transitioned into the middle of the show, where fans were treated to old favourites and freestyles. They were certainly hyped for the likes of 'Play', 'Leon Best', and 'All Hallows', which are underground classics in the scene. The transition  from the original to the Faze Miyake remix of the former certainly got the crowd jumping. Moshing was certainly taking place, although I gave it a miss this time. He was also able to freestyle with ease over the beats of DJ Zinc's 'Wile Out' and Jammer's 'Royal Rumble'. The versatility here made me hopeful for a few collaborations in the rave scene to come.

We then came to a conclusion, with the night ending in style. An unreleased Conducta remix of 'Steptronic' got the party vibes going. The night would then finish with 'Later' before chants of 'one more song' led to 'Pat Earrings'. They were the most popular of the new material but were fitting closers (although, I would have liked to hear 'Skydive'.).

CASISDEAD

CASISDEAD has built a loyal fanbase through his witty lyricism and unique delivery over beats that most U.K. MCs couldn't hop on. Through this performance, you saw a man at the pinnacle of his powers, who knew how to get the crowd going and make them feel welcome. He brings energy, charisma, and sleekness to the stage, showing he is a very good performer. If tickets are still available, make sure to see him live!

Score: 4/5
